British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need 'to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.'

At our school these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy:

Pupil voice plays a big part of life at Priory Junior School. Children represent their class-mates, following election, in a variety of ways: the School Council, Sports Ambassadors, Eco-reps, and Bike It Crew. Pupil questionaires and discussions with pupils are also conducted throughout the year. We know that through involving children in these ways, we will sow the seeds for a more sophisticated understanding of democracy in the future.

The Rule of Law

Our School Values underpin the ethos of the school, and guide our rules. We know that our children will encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. We want our children to understand that whether these laws govern the class, the school, the neighbourhood they live in, or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to. This understanding of rules is consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum.

Individual Liberty

We invest a lot of time in creating a positive culture in our school, so children are in a safe environment where choices and freedoms are provided. We offer a range of clubs which pupils have the freedom to choose from, based on their interests. Through our e-safety and PSHE lessons, we educate children on their rights and personal freedoms, as well as supporting them in recognising how to exercise these freedoms safely. We believe that valuing choice and freedom in daily school life will foster a value for individual liberty as the children embark upon their adult lives.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Our values, ethos and behaviour policy are founded on mutual respect. Our Restorative Approaches to Conflict is underpinned by mutual respect. Pupils are involved in discussions with others, and listen to others' points of view.

Our curriculum includes the study of all major religions, enabling pupils to understand and appreciate the different beliefs and faiths of others. We also include a topic focusing on the life of Nelson Mandela, and build an understanding of the impact of intolerance on society. Through our curriculum, we strive to demonstrate tolerance and help children become knowledgeable and understanding citizens who can build a better Britain for the future.
